Kanjinchō
One of the Kabuki Jūhachiban (Eighteen Great Plays of Kabuki).
Minamoto no Yoshitsune, who has fallen out with his elder brother Yoritomo, flees toward Hiraizumi in the northern region of Japan with Benkei and others. On the way, they are stopped at the Ataka checkpoint by the guard Togashi Saemon. Thinking quickly, Benkei lies, claiming they are collecting donations for the reconstruction of Tōdai-ji, which had been destroyed. He then recites a fabricated kanjinchō (subscription list) written on a blank scroll, successfully deceiving the guards and allowing them to pass.
