Biography
A Tokyo-born woodblock print artist. After graduating from Bunka Gakuin in 1955, she began producing woodblock prints in earnest. Focusing on nature—particularly "water"—as her main theme, she created abstract and poetic worlds using a variety of techniques such as sumi ink, metallic leaf (gold and silver), and karazuri (embossing without ink). In the 1950s and 60s, she actively participated in exhibitions both in Japan and abroad, including the Kokugakai Exhibitions and the Tokyo International Print Biennale. In 1956, she was involved in the founding of the Joryū Hanga Kyōkai (Women’s Print Association). A lover of haiku, she brought its spirit of “eliminating the unnecessary” into her creative practice. Her works are held in the collections of numerous museums in the United States, Europe, and throughout Japan.
