]Minister of the Right, Sugawara no Michizane, is falsely accused of treason due to the slander of the Minister of the Left, Fujiwara no Tokihira, and is exiled to Tsukushi. His son, Shūsai, also becomes a target for assassination.
In the play Kurumabiki (“The Car Pulling Scene”), three brothers appear: Matsuōmaru, Umeōmaru, and Sakuramaru. Matsuōmaru serves Tokihira, while Umeōmaru and Sakuramaru are loyal retainers of Michizane.
After Michizane is exiled, Umeōmaru and Sakuramaru lament his fate at the front of Yoshida Shrine. When Tokihira's carriage passes by, they try to stop it, leading to a confrontation with Matsuōmaru, who is part of the procession.
Angered by the disturbance, Tokihira breaks through the carriage and glares at them. Intimidated, the two brothers shrink back. They part ways with lingering resentment toward Matsuōmaru.
