"Yanone" (The Arrowhead), one of the Kabuki Juhachiban (Eighteen Best Kabuki Plays), is a vigorous and auspicious "aragoto" (rough-style, bombastic) piece set against a New Year's backdrop. It is known for the scene in which Soga no Goro sharpens a large arrowhead, and for its bold, grand finale in which he dashes off on horseback using a daikon radish as a whip.
In fact, in "Yanone," the very scene in which Goro sets off with great energy to go help his elder brother - the "departure scene" — is itself the climax and the ending of the play. The story concludes right at this peak of excitement, on the note of "now the great adventure begins," without any resolution beyond that. This theory-defying sense of exhilaration and celebration is characteristic of "aragoto," the bold performance style of Edo-period Kabuki.
