“Sukeroku” is one of the most celebrated Kabuki plays, set in the vibrant pleasure district of Yoshiwara. At its heart lies a story of revenge hidden beneath the guise of a stylish townsman.
The protagonist, Sukeroku, is known for his flamboyant manners and quick temper, often picking fights in the district. Yet there is a purpose behind his behavior. He is searching for a sword once owned by his father’s killer, deliberately provoking others to draw their blades so he can identify it.
In time, Sukeroku confronts his enemy, Ikyū, and reveals his true identity. He is in fact Soga Gorō, a samurai in disguise, patiently waiting for the moment to avenge his father.
Set against the dazzling world of Yoshiwara, this story weaves together elegance, romance, and vengeance, embodying the aesthetic sensibilities and dramatic spirit of the Edo period.
