Yaoya Oshichi is a love story passed down through generations, based on an actual event from the Edo period. After a great fire, Oshichi, the daughter of a greengrocer, took refuge in a temple, where she developed feelings for a temple page named Kichisaburō. The following year, when her family home was rebuilt, she returned and was separated from him.

Unable to bear the longing, Oshichi set a fire, believing that another disaster would allow her to see him again. At a time when arson was considered a grave crime, her act was unforgivable, and she was executed by burning at the Suzugamori execution grounds.

This story, in which sincere devotion leads to an unforeseen and tragic end, reflects both the depth of human emotion and the harsh realities of the era. Its striking drama has inspired repeated interpretations in Kabuki theater and the visual arts for generations.
