Biography
“I’m a Manga Artist, Not an Artist!”

Hideo Takeda was the first manga artist in the world to hold a solo exhibition at the British Museum.

Born in 1948 in Tenroku, Osaka, Takeda graduated from the Graduate School of Sculpture at Tama Art University in 1973. While studying there, he created a series of single-panel cartoons that attracted the attention and praise of the late Seiichi Sasaki, who was teaching at the university at the time.

In 1972, Takeda compiled these works into a collection titled *MME. CHANGE’S CHINESE RESTAURANT (Mrs. Chang’s Restaurant)*, marking the beginning of his career as a manga artist.

From then on, he held solo exhibitions in conjunction with the publication of his manga collections. In 1976, he was awarded the 22nd Bungeishunjū Manga Award.
