The Tolman Collection is pleased to announce its participation in Tokyo Gendai, one of Japan’s leading international art fairs, taking place from September 10 to 13, 2026.

Our presentation brings together two distinctive figures in modern and contemporary Japanese art: Toko Shinoda and Seiko Kawachi. Through their contrasting yet resonant approaches, the exhibition explores stillness and movement, negative space and vibrant form, and the relationship between tradition and innovation.

Toko Shinoda (1913–2021) was one of Japan’s foremost abstract artists and a pioneering figure in postwar Japanese ink abstraction. Moving beyond the conventions of calligraphy, she developed a distinctive visual language defined by decisive brushwork, carefully composed negative space, and the natural diffusion of sumi ink.

Seiko Kawachi (b. 1948) draws upon the traditions of Japanese woodblock printing while creating a bold and distinctly contemporary visual language. Inspired by Hokusai and Edo-period visual culture, his dynamic compositions of waves, Mount Fuji, and the cosmos are characterized by vivid color, rhythmic lines, and a powerful sense of movement.

Bringing Shinoda’s meditative abstraction into dialogue with Kawachi’s energetic imagery, the presentation offers two distinct perspectives rooted in the aesthetics of Japanese art.
