既成の書の形にとらわれない墨による新たな形を描き始める

書以外に水墨による抽象表現を始める。

「日本の建築と書」(ニューヨーク近代美術館、以後アメリカ各地を巡回)

「日本現代書展」(ニューヨーク近代美術館)
これ以降、日本の建築家の指名で壁画・壁書を多数制作し始める。

1956–58
渡米。この間、とくに米国内での個展多数開催。

フィラデルフィア美術館から来日した刷師アーサー・フローリーの勧めでリトグラフを制作開始
